Chapter 13: The truth

His face was without wrinkles, or age lines, but Lucca could tell he was older than him—perhaps late forties at least—by the look in his eyes.

“I will only answer the right questions asked, outsider,” the man stated, standing to his feet. “If you ask me the wrong questions, then you will not like my response.”

Now, Isabella stood to her feet, and Mickey took a step forward, sensing a threat in the man’s words. Next to him, he heard the familiar sound of a gun being prepared for firing as Michele readied himself for a fight as well. Everyone was on guard, but Lucca was unfazed by the man’s threat. It was often that people like the man standing in front of him now, underestimated the strength of what they perceived a ‘common gangster’. Lucca was much more than a common gangster, and this gentleman was about to find that out in the most painful of ways if he didn’t show respect when talking to him.

“What are you doing here?” Lucca questioned, uninterested in wasting any time.

“A better question is, what are you doing here? This is my space, and you and your band of hooligans are intruding on my meditation time.”

Though it irritated him greatly, his question not being answered, Lucca pushed forward, still uninterested in spending more time here than he had to.

“What do you want with Davina?”

The man chuckled, lowering his head, and shaking it back and forth. “It’s quite obvious you have no idea who you are dealing with. Do you have any clue what type of danger you are in?”

His jaw clenched, but he fought against the anger that was already pushing toward the surface of his being, and he, once again, continued his questioning. “Why have you been following her?”

“A more appropriate question is why do you care, Underboss? You think you can protect her from what’s coming? No, you can’t. But, I can. This is far above your pay grade, gangster. I suggest you find another woman to bestow your affections upon.”

“What do you know of my affections?” Lucca snapped, tampering down his temper in effort to get somewhere in this conversation.

“The easier question to ask would be, what do I not know of your affections, for I know nearly everything. Every filthy, unnatural detail of this betrayal.”

“Unnatural,” Lucca repeated.

“I’m not a big fan of race mixing, Underboss.” The assassin chuckled. “Nor am I in agreement with an individual of such high class even exchanging pleasantries with someone so … common, much less becoming romantically involved.”

The man’s eyes were as expressive as the emotion he put into each word he spat at Lucca.

Hate.

Not to mention he thought himself better than Lucca, and there was nothing—nothing—Lucca hated more than being looked down upon.

“Are you here to kill someone?” Lucca took a shot at answers.

His last question received a response, so he figured he was headed in the right direction.

At the inquiry, the man straightened, his eyes narrowing on Lucca. “Yes,” he growled.

It was a simple answer, but an answer, so Lucca saw it as progress.
